SPF Basics: Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen—What’s the Difference?

When it comes to sunscreen, most products fall into two camps: mineral and chemical. Both are effective at protecting your skin from the sun, but they work in different ways—and knowing the difference can help you choose what feels right for your skin, your lifestyle, and your values.

Let’s break it down.

How They Work

Mineral sunscreens (also known as physical sunscreens) sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. Their active ingredients are typically zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. Common actives include avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene.

Texture, Feel & Wearability

Mineral formulas are often thicker and can leave a white cast—especially on deeper skin tones—since they contain natural white minerals. While formulations have come a long way, they may still feel heavier or less seamless under makeup or sweat.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, tend to be lighter, more transparent, and more wearable for everyday use. This is one of the reasons we chose a chemical-based formulation for our spray: it’s lightweight, invisible on skin, and effortlessly wearable, even at the beach or on the move.

Safety & Ingredients

There’s been a lot of talk about sunscreen safety—and rightly so. At SNAP, we believe protection should never come at the expense of your health or the planet.

Our chemical sunscreen is:
- Oxybenzone-free
- Aerosol-free
- Paraben-free
- PABA-free
- Retinyl Palmitate-free

We formulate without the ingredients that raise concerns—and still deliver broad-spectrum SPF that guests actually want to use.

So Which One Is Better?

Honestly? The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear.

Mineral sunscreens can be a great fit for ultra-sensitive skin or young children, while chemical sunscreens are often favored for daily wear, high-performance activities, and spray formats that make reapplication easy.

At the end of the day, consistent protection matters more than the label.

The Bottom Line

Whether you go mineral or chemical, SPF is non-negotiable. But knowing what’s inside your sunscreen—and how it works—can help you choose the one that fits your skin and your lifestyle best.

At SNAP, we’ve built our formula to be safe, effective, and effortless, because sun care should never slow you down.
